Matthew L. Schuerman was born and raised in Chicago and attended Harvard College. After graduation, he spent two years in Germany teaching English before returning to the U.S. and earning a master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. His first professional journalism job was as a reporter at The Day newspaper in New London, Conn. After moving to New York City, he began freelancing for The Village Voice, The New York Times and other publications before becoming a staff writer at The New York Observer covering real estate and economic development. Schuerman later worked at WNYC public radio and then National Public Radio. His projects have won numerous honors, including a prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in innovation. His first book, Newcomers: Gentrification and Its Discontents, was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2019.
